Bowen Therapy is a type of manual therapy for mind-body integration. It approaches from mind to body by gently releasing emotional tension first and then somatic tension in muscles and connective tissues. Releasing tension in both sides powerfully elicits natural healing of diverse body conditions. The technique was established in Geelong, Australia by Mr Tom Bowen (1916 - 1982), a legendary manual therapist. According to the Report of the Committee of Inquiry into Chiropractic, Osteopathy, and Naturopathy by the Victorian Government of Australia, Mr Bowen treated about 13,000 patients per year. The extraordinary performance of Mr Bowen in his practice implies there might be important physiological principles underlying his approach for healing. Since 1986, the same principles that Mr Bowen refined have been taught throughout the world.

In a Bowen therapy session, a series of gentle pressure moves are applied with thumbs and fingers onto precisely chosen points of the muscles, tendons and ligaments to address the fascia lying beneath the skin and between the muscles. Rehydration of the fascia, a matrix of connective tissue regains the body's state of balance. Feelings of deep relaxation, improved vitality, better body mechanics and reduced pain are common following the treatments. As the trans-fibre Bowen Moves are so gentle that Bowen Therapy can be safely applied to anyone from babies, pregnant women, and amputees to elderly people but yet so powerful in yielding the self-healing capacity of the body. Animals--dogs, cats and horses also respond to Bowen Therapy well.
